Burnside H.S. Wins Tournament With Taieri

In spite of a heavy 22-0 loss in the Rugby niatfh, Burnside High School emerged as the winner from its first inter-school tourney with Taieri High School of Dunedin. The contests, which were held at Burnside on Thursday and Friday were won by the home team by 6-3. RUGBY Playing into a cold southwesterly in the first half, Taieri established an 11-0 lead. Burnside never gained enough clean ball from the tight play to be able to call the tune at all, except for a brief period in the first half. Taieri had a grand leader in all aspects of play in the captain and hooker. R. Findlay. He led his pack by example, won more scrums, and got up higher than anyone else in the lineouts. He was capably supported by B. Brooke and E. Duff. Th# number eight forward, K. Whitson, roved with superb results and. as his three tries suggest, went very hard for the line. The combination of D. Knox (half-back) and C. Starkey (first five-eighth) had an easier passage than its Burnside opposites and gave an astute service to the outside backs. The full-back. B. Henman, was a safe last line and he also joined the backline to good effect. The Burnside hooker, A Stockdale, was the most impressive of a beaten pack and was especially prominent in the loose while J. Bradley (prop, put in some useful work in the line-outs. The half-back. D. Dalzell, played a most plucky game but outside him. R. Curragh did not have a very good day. his hands repeatedlyletting him down. However, he covered very well at times as did R. Harrow (wing). G Thomas (second fiveeighths) indulged in some crashing tackling and the way that he slipped his opposite early in the game—which nearly led to a try—was a delight to watch. The full-back G. McClurg, used the following wind very well with his linekicks but his general play was not up to the same standard and he showed a tendency to flykick rather than go down on the ball.

Taieri scored its points with tries by Whitson (3) and W Hollard (21. while Whitson kicked a penalty goal and a conversion and Henman a conversion. SOCCER The Taieri team, by adapting itself to the conditions better gained a narrow 4-3 win. The olayers linked better than did Burnside and made better use of the ball. S. White showing admirable ball-control and the centre-half, D. White, bringing a lot of punch into the attack However. the Dunedin team was lucky that Burnside's centre-half. P. Skelton, did not head for the goal more often for whenever he did so. he looked decidedly dangerous. S. White (2). D White and D Eaton scored for Taieri and Skelton (2) and Gussette for Burnside. BOY’S HOCKEY Far better use of its opportunities gave Burnside a 3-0 win and although Taieri often made it as far as the circle it did not seem to have the power to capitalise on those efforts. The losing team's centre-half, T Porteous. covered extremely well but always appeared to be Ighting a losing battle as well as a lone one R. Stevenson made some penetrating runs on Burnside’s right-wing while D Blyth (centre-forward) showed a penchant for scoring goals. BASKETBALL Although Burnside won both games by fairlv heavy margins

—the A game by 39-14 and the B game 28-B—the scores were perhaps a little unfair to Taieri which performed better than it would seem. However, the handling and the footwork of the apparently more experienced Bumside girts, coupled with some really accurate shooting left no doubt about their superiority. GIRLS’ HOCKEY Burnside also carried too many guns in the two girls’ hockey games and the A team won 5-1 and the B team 4-2. TABLE TENNIS Taieri redeemed itself a little here and won. 3-1. DEBATING This was held on Thursday night and Burnside, taking the negative side of the motion "that modern entertainment has a harmful effect on society," won by 256 points to 242. i
