Lake Manapouri
Sir, —We greatly appreciate many of the points made in your editorial on Manapouri. However, you state: “In terms of output the raising of Lake Manapouri will not greatly increase the attractions of the scheme; but in terms of cost to the power consumer it will be very important.” May I ask what evidence there is for this latter assertion? To put the question another way: have you any evidence that the 600,000 kilowatts of continuous power available from the Deep Cove station with the lake raised will be any cheaper per unit than the 520,000 kilowatts which the Bechtel report states is obtainable from the same station if Manapouri is not raised? If so can you tell us what it is? The lakes are “an
unusually economical souro* of power" whether raised or not, and the Minister has still not answered the challenge to prove that raising Manapouri is necessary.—Yours, etc., P. S. COOK, N.Z. Scenery Preservation Society. July 5. 1963.
