SEISMIC WAVES

Arrival Times Predicted The time of arrival of a tsunami (seismic ocean wave) at any of 11 points on the New Zealand coast has now been computed for a wave arriving from any direction, says the director of the Oceanographic Institute, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr J. W. Brodie). The calculation has been made by Mr A. E. Gilmour of the institute. The information is now available in tabular form, but a chart is also being prepared on which the travel times will be indicated, Mr Brodie said. The 11 points on the coastline for which calculations have been made are New Plymouth, North Cape, Auckland, East Cape. Napier, Wellington. Lyttelton, Dunedin. Bluff, Milford Sound, and Westport. The tabulation gives figures for waves arriving from each of 36 directions, spaced at lOdeg intervals all round the compass. The work was started after the arrival in New Zealand of seismic waves from the Chilean earthquakes of 1960.
