ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE
Burnham Soldier Sentenced Private Te Arohu Frederick Green, aged 34, was sentenced to nine months’ detention by a district courtmartial at Burnham Military Camp. The sentence is subject to confirmation by the convening authority. Private Green was charged with desertion, to which he pleaded not guilty. He was found not guilty on this charge but guilty on an alternative one of being absent without leave. Private Green said that after being refused a discharge and transfer by the Army he left Burnham on April 30, 1962, to visit his girl friend in the North Island and to get married. He later decided not to get married, and worked in Rotorua until early last month, when he returned to Christchurch. On June 17 he went into a Government office in Worcester street to see whether there was a provost section in the city Later he was arrested at the office by the military police Lieutenant A. F. Clement was the defending officer, and Lieutenant K. J. Beale prosecuted. The court consisted of Major J. Rathbun (president), Captain F C. Hickey, and Lieutenant B F. Jones. Major G C C. Sandston was judge-advocate.
