“Names Should Be Published” Shoplifters’ names should be published, said Mr E. A. Lee. S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when dealing with a solicitor’s request for interim suppression of the name of a woman accused of shoplifting. The Magistrate referred to the “long row” of shoplifters to appear before Six persons appeared during the morning on charges of thefts from city’stores. “It is the same old story: they are all terrified of publicity,” said the Magistrate The courts had announced on many occasions that names of shoplifters should be published unless there were very special circumstances, particularly as the offence was so prevalent. “Shopkeepers are entitled tc know who these people are." he said. “If they choose to commit shoplifting offences, knowing their name is going to be published, that is the risk they take.”
