School Board Discusses Extension Of Halls

A suggestion that existing school assembly hall# should be extended to cope with larger school rolls was discussed by the board of governors of Christchurch Boys’ High School. Suggesting a remit to the conference of the New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association. Mr R K. Milne said that it wa-s essential for the whole of the school to be accommodated in the assembly hall, but that many schools especially older ones, were without the necessary hall space. Much of the money for the school hall had been raised by ok! boys and friends of the school, and it seemed reasonable to seek a grant tor extensions when assembly halls were now included tn the cost of high schools under construction. Mr’K. A. Gough said that the remit should apply not

only to older-erabliahed school*, as many of the new schools had already outgrown their hail accommodation, and would be interested in the application. It was only quite recently that schools had been getting halte that were adequate for their rolls, he said "If it is a problem it is not one which can be solved immediately, because of the enormous capital expenditure Involved." said Mr Gough. As Boys’ High School was negotiating to extend it* own hall, it might be best to do as much as possible on its own behalf before putting the matter on a general footing, said Dr. T. R. Anderson. The board decided to discuss the matter further in com..i,ttee. The board approved a remit suggesting the employment of technicians to maintain school science equipment. This ancillary staffing was already under negotiation but it would do no harm to emphasise the need in a remit, said the headmaster (Mr C. F. S. Caldwell). The technician service should operate after the manner of the library service in schools, said Mr Gough. There was a heavy expenditure on science equipment, and much of it was complicated and highly technical in its maintenance requirements, perhaps beyond those who used it in demonstrations.
