Uniforms, Fees For New Preparatory School
Tlie registrar of Middleton Grange. the new interdenominational preparatory school, has had requests from 60 parents for the school prospectus, and a meeting called by the board of governors last evening was attended by 200 persons. It was announced .that the fees would be £ 20 a term for ttie primers and £25 a term for standards I to 4 The prospectus invites clergy and missionaries to ask the -egistrar about special rates The new school in Acacia avenue. Riecarton. will be in the Middleton Grange house jn five acres of parkland, bought by the school’s sponsors for more than £12,000 A further £ 5000 is being spent to build two more classrooms ready for the first term in February. Child models showed the parents the school uniform last evening. Boys will wear grey suits, grey shirts, H lining Fraser tartan ties, green oul lovers. green blazers, green caps grey socks with a rreen band, and grev gabardine raincoats Tlie cap badge will be a red shield with a gold sword In summer the boys will wear greydrill shorts and shirts. Girli will wear Hunting Fraser tartan skirts, with
green blouses, green roundneck pullovers, green blazers grey gabardine raincoats and green Breton-sailor felt hats In summer they will wear pink and white check gingham frocks and white Breton-sailor hats. Both boys and girls will wear brown lace-up shoes in winter and sandals in summer. Mr P. L. Cliignell, the headmaster, said God had called the school into being “It’s to be a Christian school —a Christian preparatory school for girls and boys,” he said. He believed a Christian preparatory school must produce Christian boys and girls. “I’ve seen it happen in some devilish surroundings," he added. The school would have a “Wendy house” in which children would learn to spell from tags on familiar objects, and new ideas and methods would be employed. Emphasising his belief in the importance of a Christian atmosphere. Mr Chignell said he felt mathematics became a much more interesting subject for a child when it was done "to the glory of God.” The school will begin in February with four classes — two primer classes and two standards.
