TOLL BRIDGES AND TUNNELS
City Man Sees U.S. Projects
Mr L. G. Amos, a member of the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority and the Lyttelton Harbour Board, has visited toll-collecting bridges and tunnels and seen tiarbour administration work in the United States in the few weeks he has been away from New Zealand. Mr Zjnos, who is on a private tour, is travelling with Mr S. £ Boenas, a member of the Christchurch Transport Board and a former Harbour Board member. In San Francisco they were shown the Golden Gate bridge and had the tollcollecting system explained to them. In New York they spent several hours as guests of the Port of New York Authority, being shown the Lincoln tunnel and the George Washington bridge. They were taken by helicopter over part of New Jersey and New York bordering the Hudson river and landed on the Manhattan Island Port Authority’s building. In a letter home, Mr Amos said one of the most interesting features of the American visit was the closedcircuit television for the Lincoln tunnel. This gave a clear picture of the approaches and a camera could be moved in any direction by a switch in a remote control tower. Because of his Christchurch interests and as chairman of the traffic committee of the Road Tunnel Authority, Mr Amos looked particularly for advances in cleaning tunnels. It apt peared that so far high-pres-sure spray equipment had proved the most satisfactory, he wrote.
