Captain Lancaster Avondale Pick

“Th* Press" Jtoecisl Service

AUCKLAND, June 28. The possibilities eaver seek a range that there is M saying which wW be favourite fa the first leg of the T-AJB. doable, the Rawson H*taHe*p. at Aveofiale tomorrow. Cotain Lancaster taoae of ths candidates with admirer* and others are Harrier and Blue Beard. If the weather tarns, Craddock win enter dioA change to heavy ground might also help Captain Lancaster, and it would probably be to the liking of Advocacy. Captain Lancaster, at five yean, looks readier to run the longer middle-distances, and judged by his fourth over a mile and a quarter at Te Awamutu the other week he is close to winning form. Captain Lancaster comes from Takanini, where he is trained by P. Mcllroy for Mr and Mrs R. Rowan. Harrier and Blue Beard are both from the Waikato, Harrier being one of A. Cook's team and Blue Beard from M. Martinovich's stable. Harrier finished close behind Captain Lancaster at Te Awamutu, in the Woodstock Stakes, a mile and a quarter, last month. He looked good when winning over 11 furlongs at Te Rapa and, just beforehand, he went fairly well even though unplaced, over the Rawson Handicap course—ll furlongs—in the Foley Handicap. Harrier looks as though he prefers good footing, and he might be suited by bigger tracks like the one at Avondale. Harrier is the top-weight with 8-12. Blue Beard (8-11) has an excellent form back-, ground and Advocacy, Jim’s' Count and Pale Face have also .done very well lately. Second Leg Bargoed is iin such capital form that he is pretty certain to be the popular way with bettors on the second leg, the President’s Handicap. In two of his last four races Bargoed won the Caltex Mile and the York Handicap, a mile, at Ellerslie. The York Handicap was three weeks ago. Bargoed has not raced meanwhile and by the look of him he has done very well. Some of the smart gallopers with which Bargoed will have to contend are Court Raid, Shakespeare, Young Ray and Maimoa.

Except for Court Raid, which has 9-4, each will be receiving a fair amount of weight from Bargoed, which is the top-weight with 9-8. Shakespeare has 8-10, Young Ray 8-8, and Maimoa, 8-0. A further fine, sunny spell dried the ground. which should provide excellent winter going. Selections:— 11 a.m.—Mt. Albert Steeplechase : Ringlock, Da vett.
