U.S. DEFENCE SPENDING

Cuts Forecast (N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 25. America is preparing to reduce its overseas military deployments and reduce the size of its Army, Navy and Air Force, United Press International reported today. A military manpower reduction of 60,000 —perhaps mbre —was one of several drastic moves now in prospect as the Kennedy Administration sought to reverse the upward spiral of United States defence spending and achieve large economies, the news agency said. The timing of actions to be taken was yet to be decided, apparently, but they were expected to occur over the next two years depending on international developments The turning point would come next Jnauary when the President sends his new Budget to Congress. It was expected to end the upward trend that has seen defence outlays rise from 41.500 million dollars in the last year of the Eisenhower Administration to an estimated 51.000 million dollars for the year starting July 1.
