STOCK LOSS IN BULLER
Relief Sought For Farmers (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 26. A deputation from the dairy section of Federated Farmers today gave its views on the situation of Buller district farmers to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Talboys). The deputation, including Mr J. J. Parsons and Mr R. M. Woolerton, told the Minister that the dairy farmers’ Stock losses through tuberculosis eradication only emphasised the basic difficulties of the area which required new investment of funds to improve farms. The deputation held that the farms had an excellent potential, but were not enjoying investment from the usual sources and the precarious position of some farmers has worsened by the tuberculosis problem. Tire farmers have claimed that they face unusual penalties because of the cost of transporting infected stock to east coast works for slaughtering and replacement stock back to their farms. They have also complained of the delay in killing the infected stock which means a delay in the assessment of the compensation payments on which they rely to purchase new animals. The farmers have the full support of the dairy section in their plight and it is understood Mr Taibays will announce his decision on relief soon. This will be based not only on the immediate difficulties created by the campaign for the eradication of tuberculosis but on the general economic situation in the district.
Birth Control. —An oral contraceptive for men has been successfully developed, a Conservative member, Mr J. Hall, told the House of Commons yesterday. The Minister of Health, Mr E. Powell, said the drugs were made available only on the responsibility and judgment of a doctor.—London, June 25.
