TROTTING Axis Has Been Leased To Race In Australia

Axis has been leased by his Motueka owner, Mr J. MacG. Inglis, to Mr R. E. Martin, of Sydney. He will be one of 10 trotting-bred horses booked to leave for Australia from Bluff towards the end of next week.

Axis showed great promise as a three and four-year-old, but was a big disappointment this term when he failed to return a dividend in 17 starts. However, he has paid his way with eight wins and seven placings from 52 starts and has won £3485 in stakes. His best win was over Frown and Patchwork in the Bryndwr Handicap at Addington more than 12 months ago. He took records of 2.38 4-5 for 10 furlongs, 3:11 for 12 furlongs, 3:28 2-5 for 13 furlongs and 4:21 4-5 for two miles.

Axis is a rising six-year-old gelding by U- Scott from a smart mare in Real Globe, by Springfield Globe. If he can be made to race generously, he should be a big winner in the new season for Mr Martin.

The trotter. Full Measure, has also been leased by Mr Martin. This aged mare by Ripcord from Glen Logan seldom trotted a bad race this season even though she gained only one win and four placings from 17 starts Her win was in the Selby Handicap, over two miles at the Auckland Cup meeting in December. Full Measure is usually most reliable and she should be a great prospect under Australian /conditions, where the class of trotters is not high. Whipdale, a rising seven-year-old half-brother by Whipster to Rannack Song, has been purchased by the Sydney trainer, J. C. Caffyn. Whipdale was sold more than 18 months ago by his Springston owner-trainer, R. H.

Negus, to Mr H. S. Barry, of Auckland, for whom he failed to win a race. He could not handle rightbanded tracks in the Auckland district and he was returned to Negus early this season. However, he had only five starts up to early October, after which he was put aside. Whipdale showed useful form early in his career, one of his wins being at the expense of Dandy Briar over 12 furlongs at Hutt Park. Wee Mon. a rising seven-year-old gelding by Prince Regent from Moccasin, has been sold to a patron oi’ L. Chant’s Sydney stables. Wee Mon failed to show form in six starts this season, and in 12 starts the previous year His last win was in the Marlborough Cup in February. 1961. Smart Mare Lilt, a rising nine-year-old mare by First Lord from Bettyapolis, will do her future racing in the interests of the Sydney trainer, W. Picken,

and Mr I. Langford, of Oxford, ’ who now hold her on lease. The same combination has enjoyed a great run this season with Mary Mavis, which they hold on lease from Mr G. E. Gelletly, of Hawarden. Lilt raced with distinction this season for her Waikari part-owner and trainer, S F CaYtipbell. She had a strenuous season and had 31 starts for three wins and 11 placings worth £1445 in stakes. Her best win was at Forbury Park at the Festival Cup meeting where she beat Terako Queen in the Visitors’ Handicap. Lilt is usually a most reliable beginner and she should do well on the small, turning tracks in Australia.

Kapuni, a promising three-year-old filly by Johnny Globe from Snow Jane,* has been sold by Mr H. B. Kay, of Christchurch, at a substantial price to Mr A. Sternhill, of Sydney. The sister to Snow Globe showed ability in her three starts this season from D. G. Jones’s Templeton team. She was a splen-did-third to Steigerman and Miriam Hall in the South Taranaki Stakes at Hawera in April at her most recent start. She should be a grand prospect in Australia. Top Class, too, will do his future racing in Australia. A rising 11-year-old gelding by High Class from Lucky Girl, he performed dismally in .wo starts early this season. His most recent win was in December, 1960, when he beat Little Eve in a £9OO race at Alexandra Park Raceway. The brood mare, Scottish Pigeon, and a three-year-old filly by Fallacy complete next week’s shipment. Scottish Pigeon, in foal to Garrison Hanover, has been purchased by Mr R, W Croghan, of Sydney, who made several other purchases in the autumn.
