William David Fit In Final Trial

The Riccarton trainer, J. L. Barr, will saddle three fit runner* for the Thomas Seaton Memorial Handicap at Washdyke tomorrow and provided the ground is reasonably good, William David might be the best of them. Although William David (Swanson) was beaten in his final trial for the second leg of the South Canterbury Jockey Cl tub's double, that did not detract from the merit of his effort at Riccarton yesterday. He was obviously not handling the ground as well as his stablemates in a three-sided mile, yet nan Donna Maria (Collins) to half , a length and beat Navarone (Martin) by the same margin. Navarone set the pace far the first two furlongs in 28 3-ssec. but Donna Maria was with him at the end of five in Imin 10 l-ssec and William David trailed them in a gap of four lengths. They were well into the straight before William David was able to stretch out freely but be closed the gap quickly to his companions in the last furlong of a Imin 51 4-ssec mile. Fast times were out of the question on the No. 6 grass where all the fast work was held. The track was greasy and inclined to curt out after overnight showers and a frost. Fastest Sprint The fastest sprint of the morning was recorded by Vesture, a candidate for the hack sprint at Washdyke She left five furlongs behind in Imin 8 3-seec and came the last three with Paua (Daley) in 39 3-ssec. Paua led by a length and a half at the finish. Vesture was ridden by K. Reggett.

Happy Venture (Williams) was schooled first over the pony hurdles then ran a mile boldly with Corel Chief (N. Eastwood) and Mhor (Hadfield). Happy Venture and Coral Chief ran together in front and Mhor tailed off from the start. They ran the first two furlong-; in 29 4-ssec, and the five in Imin 11 2-seec. Thea Happy Venture worked deer starting the run home. At the end of the diatatnee, which took Imin 53 I-ssec, he led Coral Chief by a length and Mhor by four lengths.

i Happy Venture, which struck bother early ait Ashburton last week, seems in good order for the Thomas Seaton Memorial. Tremble (Messent) worked over ground, but was at speed only from the three furlongs which took 43 l-ssec. She could be am improver in the Kingsdown Intermediate Handicap tomorrow. Bona Fide (Reriiti) beat St. Malo (N Eastwood) by a neck with Filspar (Mein) five lengths back at the end of six furlongs in Im in 22 2- the final three in 41 3- St. Maio closed s fair gap to bis stablemate in the run home. Bona Fide is a farm runner for the Winchester Stakes at Washdyke. Gold Find (Beck) worked away from the six at threequarter pace, but quickened to run his last three in 43 3-seec. He will run against the milers in the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap at Mygrid (Beck) and Flagon (Hadfield) rounded off an easy mile by sprinting home from the three furlongs in 42 4-ssec. Flagon tailed off for a start, then drew Level in the straight, but Mygrid pulled away again dose to the end to lead her companion by three parts of a length. Idol Prince (Hadfield) took Imin 25 3-ssec to run his six furlongs and came home from the three in 42 l-ssec. He will be trying to improve on a lengthy siring of minor piacLngs in toe Winchester Stakes. His Host (Collins) ran his first two furlongs in 28 l-ssec and round off five in Imin 10 2- He could shape well over toe Caroline Stakes distance. Count Pierre (Cowles) left Golden Howe (beck) far behind in their run over six furlongs. Count Pierre ended toe gallop about 15 lengths dear after taking 42sec for his first three furlongs and Imin 24 l-ssec for toe distancc. Melodic (F. H. Skelton) was not out for time when he ran toe last six furlongs of a mile in Imin 25sec, and came home toe last three in 42 3- Although he raced badly st Ashburton last week he could still be • strong contender for Donald Grant Memorial honours. Moesburn, which will make a fresh start to the Winchester Stake*, took 40 2-ssec to run toe last three of four furlongs. She was ridden by A H. Eastwood.

Waverley (F. H. Skelton) led Approval (Low) by a length and a half at the end of six furlongs in Imin 22 l-ssec. Both had had enough at the finish after dashing over the first three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. It was not an impressive trial for the Donald Grant Memorial by Approval.
