MELOTONE IN FORM

Smart Gallop At Wingatui "The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, June 27. Melotone. a form runner tor tile Thomas Seaton Memorial Handicap, the second leg of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's double, was one of the most impressive workers at Wingatui this afternoon. Samsi, Warfare, Kumai, McGregor, The Wanderer and Runaway also came through their task* in a pleasing manner. A heavy frost delayed the work until after 1 p.m. The plough offered good footing, although there were patches of surface water. The Inside grass track was heavy.

Melotone (R. O. Cairns) appeared to be galloping very easily alongside Samarkand (W. Gye) over five furlongs on the plough in Imin ssec, the last three furlongs in 39see. Melotone has been placed in his two races since joining A. and H T Anderton's stable and he has prospects in the Seaton Memorial. Kumai (J. Carvalho) and McGregor (B. J. Anderton) were on terms over the same ground in Imin 5 l-ssec, the last three

.urlongs in 39sec. Both horses look well for their engagements at Washdyke. The Wanderer went out to do a steady three furlongs but he took oft at the half-mile and B J. Anderton let him run along in Msec, the last three furlongs In 40sec. The veteran galloper has never looked better He will appreciate the drop in the weights to 8-11 in the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap. Not Extended Runaway (J. R. Dowling) was not extended in running the last half-mile of his five furlong trial in 53 4-ssec, the opening furlong in 13sec. A close second at his last start, he is the early favourite for the Caroline Maiden Stakes. Belle El Nil (J. R Dowling) worked well in 53 2-ssec. She will contest the two-year-old event on the second day of the meeting Royal News (M. Turnbull) recorded 54sec after taking 15sec for the first furlong. Coat of Arms (R. Wilder) and Peter James (J. D. Pamkhurst) sprinted home from the three furlonvs tn 39sec. Sudd El Nil (T Powell) came from the half-mile in 53 4-ssec It was only over the final three furlongs that he was at top speed and he showed dash in 37 4-seec. In one of the few gallops on the inside grass, with the trestles 30 feet out. Warfare (M F Dowling) ran half a mile from the seven to the three In 52 3-ssec. the last three furlongs in 40sec. She will test the milers in the Donald Grant Memorial Stakes. Tunku. ridden by his race rider, R. O Cairns, jumped four hurdles in impressive manner but he was lame after pulling up If he misses his engagement in th* Tekapo Hurdles. Calms will have the mount on Port Lanyard. ATTRACTIVE FIELDS TO PARADE AT WASHDYKE The finest field of class horses we have ever been lucky enough to see at Washdyke will parade tomorrow. The meeting of the two grand race mares. Double and Shangri-la would be worth going miles to see even if no other top milers were competing. The second leg of the Double has also drawn a good field. The field for the Intermediate Class is another good one of up and coming horses The Steeplechase event has an excellent entry. All the fences have been modernised recently with white Sighter Boards in front of each, tn an endeavour to reduce fails and make the race more spectacular. Another 'innovation being provided by the club tor the benefit of patrons is the supplying tn the race book* of recent performances of runners Ttd* programme could not be excelled anywhere tn toe South Island. No effort has been spared to make tomorrow's meeting one tor patrons to remember with joy and pleasure. To obviate any tiresome waiting -between new there will be shorter interval* between starting time*. The meeting will be run strictly to time, and unless something unforeseen occur*, will finish at 4 pm. —Advt.
