ACCIDENTFREE DAY
Plans For May 1
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright WELLINGTON, June 25.
"Arrangements are in hand to name May 1 next as a national accident-free day,” said the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) in a statement tonight.
The suggestion originally came from the North Otago Road Safety Committee and wasbased on a successful nation-wide scheme carried out in Sweden, said Mr McAlpine.
The object of the scheme was to bring home forcibly to every citizen on this one day the need for extreme care on the road.
“It is felt that something out of the ordinary is required to make our citizens more road safety conscious and on this special occasion every person who uses the road will be exhorted to make a personal effort to maintain it as an accidentfree day.
“Experience in Sweden has shown that such a scheme did much good and reduced accidents both before and after the day named,” said Mr McAlpine.
