APARTHEID POLICY

Verwoerd To Stand Firm

(N Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, June 26.

South Africa would not yield to pressure to change its racial policies, the Prime Minister (Dr Verwoerd) said yesterday He was replying in Parliament to the Opposition leader (Sir de Villiers Graff), who had said the Government’s internal policies were creating uncertainty confusion and insecurity Dr Verwoerd said the Government followed a policy it honestly believed was to the benefit of the whole country This referred not only to the country’s whites but non-whites as well. Dr Verwoerd also spoke of attacks on South Africa at the recent Addis Ababa conference of independent African states

The states were so strongly under the influence of their newly-found independence and so conscious of their power they had “grown too big for their boots:” but South Africa should have a broad outlook and be forgiving towards these nations, he said They would sooner or la’er come to earth and learn the hard facts of life. South Africa should be helpful towards them, just as it was helpful towards her own Africans, he added.
