INQUIRY IN BRITAIN

Lord Denning At Work

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, June ,25.

The Master of the Rolls (Lord Denning) began work in London today on his inquiry into the security aspects -of the Profumo affair. Lord Denning’s terms of reference, announced last Friday, are:

To examine, in the light of the circumstances leading to the resignation of the former Secretary of State for War (Mr John Profumo) the operation of the security service and the adequacy of their co-operation with the police in matters of security.

To investigate any information or material that may come to his attention in this connexion. To consider any evidence there may be for believing that national security has been, or may be, endangered.

The United States Defence Department cleared three American airmen today of any involvement in the Profumo scandal, the Associated Press of America reported in a Washington message.

“Investigation has not given any indication whatsoever of any security violation,” the Assistant Secretary of Defence (Mr Arthur Sylvester) told a news conference.

“No military information was ever solicited from these men nor was any ever furnished by them,” he said.
