SUB-STATION IN POST OFFICE
Work Begins In Basement
A section of the basement in the Hereford street Post Office is being prepared to house an electrical distribution substation for the Municipal Electricity Department. The plant is expected to be operating within a few months, and it is hoped the underground cabling will be sufficiently advanced in the area by that time to allow the sub-station to be connected immediately with the underground system. At present the Municipal Electricity Department had 751 distribution sub-stations in its area and more are constantly being provided to cater for continually increasing power consumption. The new sub-station will supply the Post Office, part of Hereford street, and sections of nearby streets. It is among the first in Canterbury to be installed below ground level.
