N.Z. BALLADS IN LONDON
Auckland Folk Singer Popular
(London Correspondent] LONDON. June 6.
An attractive brunette. Willow Macky, who is a song-writer and folk-singer from Auckland and now sings professionally in London, caused a minor sensation with the presentation of her own number "Manawatu” last night. Patrons of the' night club where she entertains three times a week gave it a great reception. Miss Macky, followed this with her "One Night in Greymouth,” the whimsical ballad of a pub that floated down the river in a storm. She also injected into her programme one or two little numbers she gathered on a recent visit to Spain where she had been soaking uip tlie sun.
For some of her singing appearances in England—such as at the New Zealand Women’s luncheon at the Commonwealth Institute recently—Miss Macky wears her “New Zealand” costume, a full-skirted, fine cream wool frock with a panel on the bodice of Maori weaving and a narrow belt of the same weaving. A border of very narrow black and red braid, with black tassels, lends to the frock a further suggestion of the Maori theme.
