A. Palmer and a new professional golfer. J. Rule, were tied on 67 (three under scratch! after yesterday’# first round in the 100,000doUar Thunderbird tournament. Associated Press reported. Palmer, playing in his first P.G.A. tournament after a four-week rest to recover from back trouble, had halves of 33 and 34 on the 6550-yard Westchester Country Club course. He and Rule led by one stroke from W. Eggers, R. Duden, and G. Brewer. J. Nicklaus and G. Player were together on 69. with a negro. C. Sifford. and two Canadians. S. Leonard and A. Balding. R. J. Charles, of New Zealand. had a 71 (37 and 34), the same score as the defending title-holder, G. Littler, and B. Hogan. K. D G Nagle, of Australia, scored

The Auckland professional golfer, W. J. Godfrey, had a hole in one in the opening round of the Daks £3250 tournament at Wentworth (Surrey! yesterday. He sank his tee snot at the 176 yards fourteenth.
Godfrey finished on 75. four strokes behind the leaders. G Will, of Britain, and A. Devulder, of Belgium.
