Tropical Plants In Gardens
Tropical plants are the most brightly coloured at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens at the present time. In the Cuningham glasshouse there are some fine examples of foliage plants on display. In the “jungle” there is a specimen of banana in fruit and on the eastern’ side of the house a large banana is just starting to produce inflorescence. In the lawn immediately opposite the entrance of the McDougall Art Gallery there is a good specimen of Crataegus pubescens (Mexican thorn). The tree, which is native to Mexico, is of particular value in the gardens during the winter months as its golden coloured fruits remain for a long time during the winter and are always profuse.
