6.2 p.c. Rise For Season

There were record killings of lambs, sheep and cattle for export during the 1961-62 season and this put the volume of production in the country’s meat freezing industry up by 6.2 per cent. The latest issue of the Abstract of Statistics shows that the value of production increased from £112,243,000 in the previous season to £120,419,000. This meant a 7.3 per cent, increase.

Salaries and wages paid in the industry in 1961-62 were £19,972,000, an increase of 8.0 per cent, over the previous year. Capital expenditure during the year amounted to £3.8 million, compared with £4.2 million in 1960-61, says the abstract. These figures do not include work done by registered abattoirs controlled by establishments primarily engaged in freezing and preserving meat for export Nor are figures for meat export works primarily engaged in ham and bacon curing included.
