Lake Manapouri
Sir, —I visited Lake Waikaremoana a few years ago. Hydro-electric schemes there
had caused a rise in the lake’s water level, and then a 15-foot drop. The shore line was a mess of old tree trunks and pumice, making swimming unpleasant and boating difficult. The beautiful scenery was scarred. Please do not let this happen to Lake Manapouri. Before the tender for the first development, costing £9 million is accepted later this month, could Mr Goosman please explain to the lay public why the level at ttiis lie must be raised, as some well-qualified people suggest that sufficient power can be obtained to make the venture economic
without risking the scenery of this area. Why gamble with one of our country's assets?—Yours, etc., MHM June 12, 1963.
