TERM ‘BRITISH EMPIRE’
Prof. W. P. Morrell’s Review
“Some consideration on the term ’Brtish Empire’.” was the subject of an address by Professor W. P Morrell, professor of history at the University of Otago to the Historical Association (Canterbury). More than 60 persons attended. The address was preceded by a sherry party and buffet supper.
Professor Morrell said the term British Empire first became current about the time of James I. Wider use of the term came in the eighteenth century, when it was used particularly in America.
It had been used by those who thought of it in much the same way as the term. ‘British’ Commonwealth, which was later coined and used, he said.
