WORLD PLOUGHING CONTEST
Hanmer Stone For Special Cairn
A block of New Zealand stone is being flown from Christchurch to Canada this week to be set in a commemorative cairn of peace being erected at the site of the 1963 world ploughing final near Toronto. The stone, a small cube of Hanmer marble, inscribed “New Zealand.” will be set among stones from 19 other countries which will be represented in this world-wide ploughing contest. Each year a cairn of peace is unveiled a<t the site of the world final. Eventually a chain of ffiese monuments to mankind’s peaceful endeavours in the tilling'of the soil may span the world.
This year’s world final will be the second to be held in Canada. The first international ploughing contest was held at Coburg, Ontario, in 1953. Since then world finals have also been held in Ireland (twice), Sweden. England, the United States. Germany, Italy, France and Holland.
New Zealand will be represented at this year’s world final by the winner of the national final for the Atlantic Silver Plough at Fairy Springs. Rotorua, on July 20
