Oyster Research In Wales
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, June 12. A shipment of live oysters will leave Invercargill by air tomorrow morning for the shellfish research station at Conway. North Wales. The oysters are being sent by the Marine Department. The oysters are packed tn sea ice in thick polythene bags placed in an insulated container. They will go to Auckland by N.A.C. and then by a series of Pan American flights to London, arriving at Heath Row airport at 7.15 a.m. on Saturday.
Each bag of oysters contains about 101 b of sea ice which will thaw on the 12.000-miie air journey, keeping the oysters cool, in sea water, and in good condition. Dr. R. Walne, head of the Conway research station, will continue research on oysters which has been conducted for some time. This will be the second shipment he has received, and it is understood he will share it w’ith Dr. Miller, head of the Milliport marine station in Scotland. It is understood both
scientists shared the last shipment of ,iv<j oysters sent to Britain from Bluff. It is believed Dr. Walne and Dr. Miller have also received oysters from Chile The Chilean oyster resembles the Foveaux Strait oyster, and it is understood that parallel research into all aspects of both the Chilean and New Zealand shellfish is being carried on.
