“MAY LEAVE I.M.F.”

Labour Party’s Intention

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON. June 12.

Provided New Zealand was not over-committed financially. the next Labour Government would withdraw from the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt) told the North Island Electrical Workers’ Union’s annual conference today. “This will make sure that there is no chance of us being shackled to an outside organisation,” he said.

The National Government had joined New Zealand to the I.M.F. without referring it to the people as requested by Labour, said Mr Watt. He instanced Australia as a country which had become committed to the I.M.F. and which had solved its balance of payment problems by reducing internal demand and producing 130.000 unemployed at the peak, which had now dropped to 100,000.
