Restoration Proposal
The possibility of preserving the old European Hotel at Charleston, 18 miles south of Westport on the coast road to Greymouth, will be discussed at the next meeting of the Nelson .regional committee of the National Historic Places Trust.
Restoration of the 96-year-old hotel to its “former glory” by the trust was suggested on Tuesday evening by Mr P. R. May, a lecturer in history at Canterbury University.
Asked to comment last evening, the immediate past chairman of the Nelson committee (Dr. J. A. Jenkins) said the matter had not come up for consideration before. "However. I will most certainly raise it for discussion at our next meeting," he said The restoration of old buildings was an expensive business, he said, and the trust depended on local bodies and the Government for financial support. “We have to satisfy
them that our projects are practicable." Dr. Jenkins said. Built in 1867 —the year after gold was discovered in the district—the hotel is the sole relic of the davs when Charleston had a population of some 20.000. 90 public houses, three breweries, three banks, and two newspapers.
Mr May said yesterday he considered the hotel would be a fitting monument to the old goldfield centre.
