NEW YORK, June 8
New Zealand told the United Nations .yesterday of her "desperate hopes" that France will not test nuclear weapons in the South Pacific. The Soviet Union raised the question in the Trusteeship Council, then discussing the American - administered Pacific Islands Trust Terri* tory. The Soviet delegate (Mr Vladimir Brykin) said Australia had already “expressed an energetic protest to France,” and he understood New Zealand had also objected. The New Zealand representative (Mr Frank Corner) while objecting’ to discussion of the matter as irrelevant, said it was correct that his Government had registered its “alarm and protest” with France at news reports that she intended to set off nuclear explosions. “We desperately hope they will not take place,” he said. “We dislike all tests.”
Mr Brykin said that, among other dangers the tests could do great harm to fish in the Pacific, which was the islanders staple diet.
