Mr John Profumo. Secretary for War since July. 1960. at 24 was the youngest member of the war-time House of Commons, and. at 29, the youngest brigadier in the British Army. Now 48. he is the descendant of a family of Italian origin which has lived in Britain for several generations. He holds the title of fifth Baron Profumo, of the Kingdom of Italy, but decided not to use it when he inherited it on his father’s death. Educated at Harrow School and Oxford University, he served in • the North African campaign during World War II before joining FieldMarshal Alexander’s staff in Jtaly. He went to Japan as chief-of-staff of" the British military and diplomatic mission in 1945. A member of Parliament from 1940 to 1945, he became member for Stratford-on-Avon in 1950. He held a junior ministerial post from 1952 to 1957, when he became Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. He became Minister of State for Foreign Affairs—senior assistant to the Foreign Secretary—in 1959.
