RACING Grant May Beat Vamoose In Otago Hurdles Today

“The Pres*" Special Service DUNEDIN, June 7. The Grand National Hurdles winner, Vamoose, is the early favourite for the Otago Hurdles, but Grant has been selected to win the feature jumping race at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Wingatui tomorrow.

Grant won this race two years ago with 9-5. Then he beat the top-weight and favourite, Promise. Tomorrow he has 9-11.

Grant, which is trained by his owner, J. J. Flynn, at Wairio, is at present at the top of his form. His brilliant jumping has been a feature of the first two days of the meeting during which he outclassed the hack steeplechasers.

Grant will again be ridden by A. Cowan, who had the mount on Vamoose when the Lo Zingaro gelding won the Grand National Hurdles at R.ccarton in August Vamoose will be ridden by J. D Pankhurst, who will resume riding tomorrow after being injured at Wadmate. Vamoose carried only 9-0 when be scored a very easy win in the Otago Steeplechase last Saturday In the Otago Hurdles he has 10-10 and the shorter distance will be against him. The best of the others may be The Frenchman. an easy winner of the Winchmore Hack Hurdles at Ashburton last month. Unlucky Runner

On the strength of his game bid for third in the Otago Steeplechase, Napoleon Bonaparte is the likely favourite for the Dunedin Steeplechase Apart from blundering at the small sod wall ait the mile Napoleon Bonaparte gave a brilliant display of jumping to force the pace in the Otago Steeples. He almost came down and appeared to be right out of the contest until he came on the scene with a late run.

His strongest rivals may be The Ranger and Port Lanyard. After losing considerable ground ait the start. The Ranger separated Vamoose and Napoleon Bonaparte in five-length gaps on Saturday Ait his previous start he was a winner over country at Waim®te.

Port Lanyard was a disappointng sixth in the Otago Steeples and raced well below the form which won him his three previous races. He is a likely improver. Popular Combination

Palisade, in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap, and his stablemate, Warfare, in the Empire Handicap, is a popular TAB. double combination.

With a win and two seconds in his last three races. Palisade is well seasoned to test the open milers. Magic Casement’s winning bid over seven furlongs on the opening day of the meeting was a strong pointer. The extra distance would not be beyond her. The recent winner, Chattel. and Irrepressible, which was runner-up to Desert Chief in the Birthday Handicap. appeal most of the others Warfare won so well on Monday that if she fulfils her engagement in the Empire Handicap, she will be a firm favourite The deterioration in the going will bring Tutt on into favour. He has raced well at Wingatui previously and was a winner at Waunate two starts back The consistent galloper, The Wanderer, which has been out of a place only once in his last 10 races, will also come in for support. Bold Venture, which was fourth on the first day, may be the best of the others The on-course double will be on the Electric Stakes and the Tainui Improvers' Handicap Fields are:— 11.30 am ELECTRIC STAKES, £223; 61 —Bardon <8).
