Indecency On Males (N.Z. Press Association) HAWERA, June 7. Royce Langdon Barclay, aged 32. a chemist, and a former scoutmaster, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on each of six charges of indecent assault on males, the sentences to be served concurrently, when he appeared before Mr A W. Yoirtt, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Stratford today. Barclay had previously pleaded guilty to the six charges involving two youths The Magistrate said the offences had occurred while Barclay held the position of scoutmaster, the youths concerned had been senior members of his troop.

A scoutmaster was in a position of trust, like a teacher, and parents were entitled to think they could trust their boys with him, said the Magistrate. It was said that the affairs started as horse play, but it developed into something unsavoury. It was also suggested that the boys had homosexual tendencies, but that should have caused Barclay to curb such tendencies.
