Biographical Notes
Sir Gilbert Edward Archey has been director of the Auckland War Memorial Museum for 38 years. He is a recognised authority on Maori and Polynesian art. He graduated from Canterbury University College in 1913, later returning as an assistant lecturer in zoology. He also became assistant-curator of the Canterbury Museum. In the First World War he served with the New Zealand Field Artillery with the rank of captain and was awarded the 0.8. E. During the Second World War he commanded the Ist Battalion of the National Military Reserve. He was made a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 1932, and in 1948 was appointed to the New Zealand Commission for U.N.E.S.C.O. In 1949 he was secretary-general of the first post-war Pan-Pacific Science Congress. He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1958 for his academic work, and last month announced that he intended to retire in 1964. Sir Gilbert and Lady Archey have three daughters.
Sir John Andrew, who is a member of the Meat Board, has given a lifetime of service to the farming community He is a former president of Federated Farmers, and has represented New Zealand many times at international conferences. He was president of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers. Sir John led the case for New Zealand at a sitting of the United States
Tariff Commission in 1960. when domestic interests sought to restrict the entry of imported lamb. The commission decided against the applicants. He also represented New Zealand at meetings of the National Woolgrowers’ Association of America in Denver. Colorado, last year. Mr James D ans is a member of the pioneer Deans family. He was born at Riccarton, and has farmed at Homebush since 1908 He is a past chairman of the Malvern County Council the Malvern Electric Pbwer Board and the Selwyn Plantation Board, a former president of the Forestry League the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and a past vice-president—now a life governor—of the Royal Agricultural Society He is a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, a farmer member of the Canterbury Museum Trust Board, and a serving member of the Riccarton Bush Trust Mr Jack Newman has represented Nelson, Canterbury. Wellington, and New Zealand at cricket, and is a New Zealand selector He also represented Nelson at Rugby and golf. He is a foundation member of Nelson Rotary and a member of the Nelson College council of governors He is a director of Newman Brothers. Ltd., and Transport (Nelson) Holdings, Limited, and a president of the Travel and Holiday Association.
