LINKS WITH EUROPE

Heath On U.K. Objectives (N Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, June 8. The Lord Privy Seal of Britain (Mr E Heath), said yesterday it was a major British objective to develop political and military cooperation with her six partners in the Western European Union.

Mr Heath, addressing the W.E.U. Assembly, said: ‘We are convinced that only so can Europe assume its proper share' of responsibility for defence within the Western alliance and in the conduct of East-West relations. Only so cafi Europe evolve an adequate economic relationship with the committed countries.” Mr Heath said ever since the breakdown of the Brussels negotiations, the British Government had been working for the “new contract" in the council at Ministerial level. Two immediate practical steps to advance the process of European co-opera-tion would be:

(1) To try to identify the precise subjects on which co-operation could best be developed forthwith. (2) Consider where improvements in W.E.U. machinery would help.
