Remanded On Murder Charge

PALMERSTON N„ June 2. A married woman. Jone Laura Chamberlain, aged 29. mother of two children aged 9 and 5, was charged tn the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North on Saturday with the murder on Friday night of her husband, Joseph Henry Chamberlain, a carpenter, aged 33. The family lived in half of a double unit house at 46 Vogel street, Palmerston North. The man, with a gunshot wound in the arms and chest, died about 9.30 p.m. on Friday while being taken to hospital in an ambulance. The two children were asleep in the house at the time. Mrs Chamberlain, who appeared in Cou. I in a red jacket, grey speckled slacks and slippers, was remanded in custody to appear in the Magistrate’s Court at Wei-
lington on June 17. after which she will be returned to Palmerston North for the taking of depositions. Mr T. S. Mihaert, J.P., and Mr W. W. Hynes. J.P.. presided at the special sitting of the Court
Mrs Chamberlain was arrested late last night and further inquiries were necessary, said Detective Inspector F. A. Gordon. Mr H. Y. Gilliand and Mr K. H. Mason appeared for Mrs Chamberlain, who was accompanied by ‘ a policewoman from Wellington. Later, at an inquest conducted by the District Coroner (Mr G. H. Lusk) evidence of identification was given by Albert Clifford Hartley, of 11 Cardiff street He said he had known the dead man, who was his wife's stepbrother, for 31 years, and had last seen him on May 18. The inquest was adjourned sine die.
