TROTTING Chance For Jilaire In Birthday Stakes

Jilaire, which was beaten narrowly by Spring Garrison on Friday, looks favourably placed on 12 yards to win the Queen’s Birthday Stakes, a feature race on the second day of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting today.

Jilaire, a daughter of Stormy way and Lauder Lass, has not finished further back than fifth in her last four starts. Her run for second on Friday was a splendid trial for this race and provided she makes a reasonable beginning, she should be hard to head.

Garcon d’Or overcame'difficuities when he finished ninth in his race on Friday. He was not far from the leaders at the finish and was not disgraced. That was his first race for some time and he could strip an improved horse today.

He is rated as one of the best of his age this season and if he can handle the track conditions, he should make a bold showing. He will be bracketed with Filet Mignon, which lost her driver on Friday.

Flyn, a place-getter at Addington nine days ago, did well to finish fifth at Ash burton on Friday. He has plenty of ability and looks to be close to worthwhile form Lyndhurst will be in demand after his impressive win at Washdyke a fortnight ago. This Captain Adios gelding has more ability than most in the race. He has drawn wide out, which could help him get under way smartly. First Battle, winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes

12 months ago, disappointed at Washdyke recently. Hi is in great order, but might need a really heavy track if he is to stage a return to' form.

Carina Star and Gin Sling appeal most of the other horses on the front. Both have paced- splendid races in recent weeks.

Gay Robin and Solemn should do best of the 12yard group. Gay r .bin wa!s a last-start winner at Waikouaiti in April. Solemn’s failure on Friday can be overlooked as she was one of a number of horses to meet trouble in a straggling start.

Nigger Minstrel’s fifth in the sprint won by Cheta on Friday suggested that he might not be out of the race from 24 yards, although he will probably find Garcon d’Or too good for him from level marks. The double will be run on the Ashburton County Handicap and the Acton Handicap. Enrich. Vanderford and Bay Prince form a likely trio for the first leg, while Automatic, Mars and Shoal Haven should do best in the second leg. Fair weather is forecast. Unless there is heavy rain the track should be in good order, if not quite as fast as on Friday.
