MASTER AND PUPIL
Wellington Out-played
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 2. The record book wiU show only a • depressing statistic: Karlsruher 7, Wellington 2. But that will be only part of the soccer history written at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. It will not record the gallantry of a never-say-die Wellington side, nor the thrilling moments in the second haJi when the local team almost beat the visitors at their own game.
Above all, the record will not show the effortless efficiency, the ruthless Inevitability, of Karlsruher's professional skill. On the occasions when Wellington was able to play man-to-man for possession, the honours were even. But the Germans avoided this tactic like the plague. Two Karlsruher players towered above their colleagues. Otto Gelsert, the inside-left, was a trickle oi quicksilver, and his five goals were masterpieces of precision. His captain and in-side-right, Heinz Ruppenstein. who played only in the first half, was just as mercurial, and his generalship was superb. For Wellington the goalkeeper, P. L. Whiting, really earned his keep, while J. M Warrender held a bustled defence together with a fair degree of success.
Wellington, playing the traditional New Zealand game, hunted the ball and the man in possession of it. Karlsrulter hunted the gaps and cheerfully sacrificed territory to hold the ball.
Determined to keep the local defence guessing," they often raced out of position, to tear holes in tlie Wellington combination while their markers chased after them.
Karlsruher proved that a ball, even when pushed or flicked, can still travel faster
Wellington's goals were scored by former Canterbury representatives. R. Moore and P. Rennell.
