LIFEBOY LEADERS
Mayor Praises Work
The City Council was t interested to see young people joining character - building
youth movements such as the Lifeboys, said the Mayor (Mr G Manning) yesterday. He welcomed 64 Lifeboy leaders who are in Christchurch to attend a three-day national training course at Tyndale House.
"We must get young people to realise they are not individuals who just go to school or work and home again. With training in youth movements, young people can develop the powers that nature has given us as individuals." he said.
By training in movements with h.gh ideals like the Lifeboys and the Boys’ Brigade, young people could learn to make their contribution to community life, said Mr Manning. Among the leaders is the first Cook Islander to lead a New Zealand team. He is Mr Kora Tuaiti. who is the leader of the 3nd Tokoroa team. Mr Tuaiti has been in New Zealand for the last 18 months. He joined the Boys’ Brigade at the age of 10. Yesterday’s programme began with a church service conducted by the Very Rev. S C. Francis, chaplain of the 6th Christchurch brigade. A collection amounting to £l5 was gathered. It will be used to further the work of the movement in the Pacific.
