Midfield Run Led To First Try
Three abortive penalty kicks at goal—two by D. B. Clarke in the fifth and seventeenth minutes and one by Hosen in the fourteenth minute—preceded the scoring of the first try for New Zealand by McKay. Connor began the movement with a midfield spurt. Meads and then Tremain gave impetus to it and McKay took the final pass and sprinted 25 yards to score near the corner. Clarke’s kick missed.
New Zealand 3, England 0. Hosen evened the scores Ln the thirty-first minute when he kicked a penalty goal from a point 10 yards outside the New Zealand 25 and slightly to the left of the posts New Zealand 3, England 3.
The All Blacks scored their second try two minutes before half-time. Whineray made a good run after fielding a loose ball and Caulton. who took his pass, centre-kicked. Meads took the ball into a ruck, from where it was dispatched swiftly by Connor to Watt Walsh and McKay Although tackled. McKay cleared the ball. Walsh nudging it ahead with his boot and then beating the gallant Davis tn a try-scoring dive Clarke again missed the kick at goal. Half-time: New Zealand S. England X
A dashing run by England’s left wing. Ranson, led to the scoring of his side’s try in the fifth minute of the second half On New Zealand’s 10-yard mark he was tackled from behind bv Caulton. but Rogers picked up the ball and. with fine judgment, punted ahead for Phillips to regain possession and score in the comer Rosen’s attempt to convert failed New Zealand 8. England 6. There were three memorable movements before the mighty goal by Clarke which won the
game. In the fourteenth minute, Horrocks-Taylor beat Watt and sent Weston twisting through a gap. The England captain grubber-kicked to the goal-line and Sykes dived foi the ball but missed In the resulting five-yard scrum the lighter England pack pushed the All Blacks back to the goalline but the ball was forced. Watt displayed elusiveness at high speed in a brilliant run in the eighteenth minute Whineray broke away from the end of a line-out, but flipped the ball to Connor who reversed play to Watt on the blind side The All Black first-five-eighths side-stepped past a host of defenders and sprinted for the line, but was flung out in the corner by Hosen. Four minutes later Meads, hunted the ball down on the English side of a line-out and began a rampaging run which was carried on by Nathan. Stewart received the ball from Nathan and dived aeross the England line, but the pass was ruled forward. _ . Clarke had two Englishmen on his back when he claimed the mark from which his great goal was kicked. He retired to a point eight yards on the New Zeeland side of half-way and his brother, I. J. Clarke, went to ground to hold the ball. The English forwards on the mark charged too soon and were waved away by the referee. Clarke kicking the goal without distraction New Zealand 9, England 6. Two minutes had elapsed between the time Clarke claimed the mark and when the kick at goal succeeded, leaving England only three minutes to save the match New Zealand conceded a scrum penalty 10 yards outside the 25 and eight yards infield. It was a good position but the trajectory of Horens kick was low. the ball fell short, and England's last faded.
