N.Z. Shop In London
[London Correspondent]
LONDON, May 13. Mr G. N. Waller, of Christchurch, joint managing director of Whitcombe & Tombs, Ltd., visited London for the opening of his firm’s branch in New Zealand House in the Haymarket. He said he hoped the premises, in the Royal Opera Arcade, would acquire the designation of the New Zealand book shop. It would handle all works published in New Zealand, including material from the Government Printer. It would be, first and foremost, a focal point for everything published on New Zealand or written by New Zealand authors—in fact, it would be an inquiry centre for all forms of Dominion literature. “It could, in fact, provide an outlet for works by New Zealand authors. published only in New Zealand.” ne said.
“New Zealand, Gift of the Sea,” containing about 40 colour and 50 black-and-white photographs by Brian Brake and 40 pages of text by Maurice Shadbolt, would be published in due course and featured in the New Zealand shop. There is a steady demand in the United Kingdom for certain types of New Zealand books, including such opposites as “The Game of Mah Jongg” and “Geomorphology” by Professor C. A. Cotton, a Dominion authority on land forms.
British people recently, too. have been evincing keen interest in material about the Dominion’s pre-school play centres. There is a consistent demand for books from New Zealand on Antarctica and on mountaineering.
