Tanker's First Visit
Playing the piano is the spare-time interest of Captain T. Govan, master of the new, Clyde-built tanker. Bristol Kestrel, which made its first visit to Lyttelton last week. In the isolation of tanker life. Captain Govan finds plenty of scope for indulging in his hobby. He purchased his present ship’s piano for only £7 10s. It turned out to be a bargain. for after he carefully tuned it, the tone was excellent.
However, Captain Govan confided that he sometimes leaves a piano behind when he leaves a ship. When visited while in port last week, Captain Govan put aside his shipboard business, took some music from his cabin drawer, and played a Chopin waltz. Captain Govan, whose home is in London, has served with the B.P. Tanker Company, Ltd., for the whole of his seafaring life. His ship. the British Kestrel, of 10,000 tons, was commissioned in 1962. Hei appointments are of the most modem design and she has a crew of 50. The tanker has mainly
operated out of Kwinana, in Western Australia, although from last October to March, she was operating from the Isle of Grain to Baltic ports.
