DECENTRALISED INDUSTRY

State Action Opposed

The annual meeting rtf the Canterbury-Westland division of the National Party yesterday rejected a Rangiora remit urging the Government to consider the practicability of decentralising industry Proposing the remit, Mr J. B. Bayley (Rangiora) said it would have the effect of checking the “eternal” drift of population to the main centres; would be of value in a national emergency and help to stabilise electoral boundaries. Tangible encouragement could be by straight subsidy, tax exemptions and possibly freight concessions. "I don’t like this at all.” said Mr E. S. F. Holland. “It infers that the Government should do something about determining where industry should go. That is for the industry to sort out itself.” Mr H. E. Radley: What about a little self-help. Why doesn’t Rangiora advertise itself?
