N.Z. LIVING STANDARDS
“Harder Work Needed”
No matter what government New Zealand had. New Zealanders, to maintain their living standards, would have to work harder, and industry. both primary and secondary. would have to become more efficient. But to do that, there must be more capital and less channelling of profit to the State, said Mr C. C. A. McLachlan in his address, as chairman, to the annual meeting of the Canterbury-Westland division of the National Party yesterday. "The day of doles and the like have gone.” he said. "The powers that be understand that to be prosperous, a nation must use its complete manpower to the greatest advantage continuously It is equally wrong to prop up and subsidise for the sake of political expediency. "We dislike interference with free markets, free men and free enterprise. We also know, how’ever. that we must have economic and social justice so that we give equality of opportunity to allow the individual to make the most of himself.
