Sponsored Ski-ing Event
Approval for a sponsored Inter-club giant slalom event on a Dominion-wide basis bas been approved for this season by the New Zealand Ski Association.
The preliminaries will be held In four zones and the winning teams from each zone will contest the final to be held in conjunction with the New Zealand ski championships at Coronet Peak near Queenstown, between August 17 and 20. The winning teams in the zone preliminaries will receive a prize of trophies and/or travel warrants to the value of £25 from the sponsoring company. W. D. and H. O. Wills (New Zealand). Ltd These teams will then compete in the for a prize of trophies and/or travel warrants to the value of £5O, also donated by the company.
Competitors from each club will consist of two men and one woman.
It was hoped that by sponsoring that type of race clubs would encourage a racing team to compete in the zones event and that the prize of £25 would help the team at the national finale for the prize of £5O as well as the honour of becoming the New Zealand champion, a representative of the sponsoring company and prominent skier (Mr R. S. Copp) said yesterday in Christchurch.
Messrs A. J. Cooper and I. Jackson have been appointed to arrange the zone races in the North Island and Messrs J. Godfrey (Canterbury) and S. Boyd (Otago) will manage the South Island’ zone race arrangements. New Zealand clubs will be split into the following four zones for the giant slalom pre-
liminaries:—
Zone I.—Clubs having their headquarters on Mount Ruapehu and north of it, including the Alpine Sports, Auckland Tramping, Auckland University. Boomerang Christiana, Mount Egmont, Otaihape, Puketei, Rotorua Tuapehu, Stratford. Taupo, Taurarangi. Tongariro, Waihato, Whakapapa, Rangitara, Pinnacle, and Matamata clubs. Zone 2.—Clubs having their headquarters between Mount
Ruapehu and Wellington (including Wellington City)-. This would affect the Aorangi. Hutt Valley, Levin, Hawke’s Bay. Manawatu. National Park. Skyline Summit, Tahurangi Tararua, Tawrina, Victoria, Wanganui, Wellington Tramping and Wellington Catholic club*. Zone 3.—Clubs having their headquarters between Wellington and Ashburton (including Ashburton). This would affect the West Coast Alpine, Craigleburn Valley. Canterbury Winter Sports. Christchurch Ski. Windwhistle, Canterbury University, North Canterbury. Amuri and Nelson clubs.
Zone 4.—Clubs having their headquarters south of Ashburton, including the Otago Ski, Otago University. Southland, Vincent Ski. Waitaki, Wakatipu, Tasman and Glen Mary clubs.
The zone 1 and zonk 2 events will be held on the national down-hill course at Mount Ruapehu on July 13 and July 14 respectively. The zone 3 events will be run in conjunction with the J. Stammers-Smith Memorial Trophy Race at Temple Basin on July 27 and July 28. It is hoped to hold the zone 4 events on August 3 but this has yet to be confirmed.
Rowing Tour.— The New Zealand eight-oar rowing squad will tour Australia in March and April next year, the chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association (Mr L. E. Brooker) confirmed today. ’
