VEHICLES AT FUNERALS
Headlight Use Requested
A request that drivers in a funeral procession should switch on their headlights in the dipped position was made yesterday by the Christchurch City Council Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F Thomas) and the district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan). Mr Thomas said the practice was common in other parts of New Zealand and also the general rule in many places overseas. It helped alert other road users when a cortege was coming, and also enabled traffic officers on point duty to avoid cutting the procession in half by shopping vehicles in the cortege at intersections. Mr Hogan said the request applied to persons in corteges in all parts of Canterbury. Most funeral directors in the city ask persons attending funerals to switch on their headlights while in the cortege but many drivers still omit to do so.
