‘MIXED MARRIAGES’ DECREE CONDEMNED

(N.Z J 3 .A. -Reuter— Copyright)

EDINBURGH, May 27. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland meeting in Edinburgh today gave overwhelming support to a report from Its church and nation committee condemning the Roman Catholic “Ne Temere” decree on “mixed marriages." According to the decree, the children of “mixed marriages”—between a Roman Catholic and a non-Catholic —must be brought up in the ftornan Catholic faith. The Assembly agreed that, in concert with other churches of the British Council of Churches, the British Government should be urged to press through its representative at the Vatican for

the withdrawal of the decree. The Assembly also agreed that a strong plea should be made for legislation. Similar to that in New Zealand, making it a penal offence to impugn the legality at a marriage celebrated in accordance with civil laws. (The Roman Cathodic Church in Britain insist* that "mixed marriage?” take place before a Catholic priest). Dr. Thomas Maxwell, secretary of the church and nation committee, referred to “this open sore in relations between Protestant* and Romans which continued to bring pain and misery to many homes.”
