WIDENING OF AVENUE

Median Strip Benefits

Widening Moorhouse avenue by setting back footpaths and then using the extra space with a median strip, might seem paradoxical, but the result would be a greater flow of traffic . than if the full kerb-to-kerb space was available to traffic, the District Commissioner of Works (Mr E. C. Smairt) said yesterday. Overseas research had shown that the provision of a central strip and marked traffic lanes on either side stepped up the traffic capacity, he said. Whereas a single lane in an ordinary street " would carry ' 600 vehicles an hour, a similar lane on a route with a median strip would carry up to 1000.

Among other factors influencing a decision for a median strip were that pedestrian crossings would be ineffective unless there were some central refuge for pedestrians, and that the median strips provided protection for traffic making righthand turns.
