COURSES ON ASIA
University In Favour (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 20. The establishment of a department of Asian studies was supported by the Auckland University Council this evening when it approved the report of a special committee which met last month.
The committee proposed that the department teach initially Chinese, Bahasafndonesian and Malay, and. as soon as possible, add Hindi. It was agreed that at least one major Asian language should be an important part of tfie bachelor of arts degree programme and that the first choice should be Chinese.
The committee also recommended that a department or sub-department be set up to provide courses in the following Asian civilisations: China, Japan. India, and South-east Asia.
The council approved the committee’s report as a basic academic programme and will inform the committee of vice-chancellors of its decision ’
