NEW LIQUOR LAWS
Police Urged To Use Tact (N Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 21. New Zealand’s new liquor laws will come into effect on June 1. although a small section dealing with dining permits is already operative The main provisions in the new legislation are printed in a recent edition of the “New Zealand Police Journal.” and an editorial in the magazine urges the police to act with tact, courtesy and firmness, “then they need have no qualms.” The journal described the liquor laws as the “policeman’s bread and butter” line —a position the policemen are not so delighted about, according to the editorial. “The police must administer the law as it appears on the Statute Book. It is not for them to decide Whether a particular enactment is one that the public like or dislike “Nevertheless. w4 have on occasions to do unpleasant things Those members of the public who realise the police are merely carrying out their duty will make due allowances
“Those who condemn the police show a distorted attitude. which on reflection, they would no doubt regret." the editorial concludes.
