Professor Piddington Awarded Hector Medal

AUCKLAND, May 13. Professor B. O. Piddington. professor of anthropology at Auckland University had taken up his work in Auckland at a time when New Zealanders. Maori and pakeha alike, were grateful for any help that his scholarship could offer for the solution of the problems of living jogether. said the president of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Dr C. A Fleming, this evening He was presenting Professor Piddington with the annual Hector Medal and prize of the society at the Auckland Institute and Museum

The medal and prize, which commemorate Sir James Hector. principal founder of the New Zealand Institute and one of New Zealand's most eminent early scientists, is awarded annually in rotation in the subjects of botany, cbemis-' try ethnology, geology physics. mathematics and astronomy, and zoology.

Professor Piddington, who was awarded the medal and prize for distinguished contributions to social anthropology. was born in Australia.

He took up his present appointment in 1950. and since then has made two field trips to Canada, where he studied kinship. am mg the French Canadians in Manitoba. He is the author of a two-volume xtbook and has contributed to the ethnology of the Australian aborigines and of the Polynesians.
